Spear Fishing Gear

When you are ready to go spear fishing you will want the right spear fishing gear to make your trip a memorable one. You can buy or rent your spear fishing gear from local sporting goods stores or from an area rental shop near the shores of popular spear fishing locations.

Perhaps the most important piece of spear fishing gear you will purchase is the spear or spear gun which you will use to actually catch your fish. A modern spear gun is a popular choice especially if you are spear fishing in deep waters. There are two main types of spear guns available the pneumatic and the elastic powered guns. Short pneumatic powered guns are great for deep sea fishing or in murky water when you can't see the fish until you are in close range of it. You will not need to carry any other type of outside power for this type of spear gun since the air is saved in a cartridge within the gun's chambers. You will also need to pay careful attention to the diving equipment you use and check it regularly for any defects. It is important to have all of your diving equipment repaired or replaced as necessary since it is unsafe to use impaired equipment when you are diving into deep waters.

It is always important to carry a knife with you when you are spear fishing. You can always use a sharp knife to dislodge entanglements or kill speared fish. You will also want to ask your spear fishing guide about any additional safety equipment you may possibly need. For example, many instructors suggest taking a special tool along on your deep sea spear fishing trips that will allow you to defend yourself in the case of a shark attack.

If you decide to rent your spear fishing gear you will still need to look it over before use to ensure that it is in good condition. Even though most of the rental shops that offer scuba and snorkeling gear are meticulous about their equipment it never hurts to give it a second glance. The rental shop may also give you some tips on the proper use for the equipment which you will want to pay special attention to. Diving can be dangerous if you do not know how to properly use the gear provided.

The last thing you will need is a fishing license. If you are in an area that regulates spear fishing you will learn about the various regulations when you register for you fishing license. It is important to get your license and be aware of the local and state laws if you want to avoid being fined.
