Fresh Water Spear Fishing

Fresh water spear fishing is a wonderful way to enjoy the great outdoors. Spear fishing has been a part of the outdoorsman culture of the world for literally thousands of years and all you really need is a sharpened spear.

There is plenty of advanced fishing gear designed for fresh water spear fishing. These tools are great for when you just want a big catch of freshwater fish for a nice open campfire fish-fry dinner.

You can enjoy fresh water spear fishing in a variety of ways. You may want to simply stand in shallow water and fish or perhaps you can dive for fish using snorkeling equipment. Spear fishing is most successful when you are fishing in clear water such as streams. Diving is a great way to catch fish when you are spear hunting especially if you can find a clear lake or river.

You will want to check your local spear fishing regulations before you begin spear fishing particularly if you are using spear guns or slings for your fishing. In some areas this type of equipment is considered illegal and you can get a hefty fine.

The spear fishing method is considered by many people to be one of the best methods of conservation. Unlike the catch and release method you will only catch the fish you want to catch so the fish that you do not want are left uninjured.

There are several types of spears and spear guns that are available for fresh water spear fishing. Traditionally, spear fishing included the use of a simple trident shaped spear. The trident is made of wood or lightweight metal and has sharpened tips on each of the three prongs.

There are two main types of spear guns available. The first is powered by a rubber band which is used to release the spear. The second is air powered or pneumatic. Most pneumatic guns can be easily reloaded and do not require an outside air source since the air is saved in a chamber. The spear itself can be as small as an arrow and will typically have a buoy attached to it. This helps to keep the fish under your control and warns others on top of the water that a diver is near by.

When you are diving you will either need snorkeling or scuba gear and some training before you get started. If you want to fish in deep water where the water is murky you will want to use a spear gun that is made for catching fish that are very close to you. It is a good idea to go diving for fish in a group or with a friend. Then if you have problems with your equipment you will have help nearby.
