Spear Fishing Tips

Safety is a key concern when you are spear fishing and you will want to keep up with the current standards for both salt and fresh water spear fishing guidelines. Knowing which spear fishing tips are useful can save your life and here are a few tips that can help you stay safe underwater.

Deep sea diving is a fascinating experience but can also pose significant risks when you are new to the sport of spear fishing in open waters. For optimum safety you should always go spear fishing with a group or at least one other person. This will help to ensure that if you have a problem with your equipment that you have a back up individual that can help.

You should take some diving classes from local instructors before you begin diving. Knowing what to do in the case of an emergency has proved invaluable when you are spear fishing alone. Remember to take the minimum recommended equipment with you. For example, a knife and a defensive weapon in the case of a shark attack are commonly recommended by diving instructors and should always be with you underwater.

Diving and snorkeling equipment should also be check frequently for flaws and defects and every time you use them. If you do notice a problem have it resolved immediately. You may forget over time and take the faulty equipment diving with you. You should replace any of your equipment which is outdated. Current safety standards are applied to all new diving equipment so keep up with the new equipment as it comes out. When you know that your equipment is lacking in safety features then you should date it.

You should always treat your spears and spear guns as weapons especially when children are around. You can buy locking mechanisms for your spear guns so that your children can't pull the trigger mechanism. You should also store any tridents or traditional spears out of the reach of children to avoid accidents.

Maintenance of your spears and spear guns is important if they are used often. You should oil your spear guns regularly even if you have not used them in a while. You will also want to remove any water, sand or dirt from the spear guns after you use them to keep them in top shape.

If you have rubber on your spear gun you should check for wear and tear regularly. A worn rubber hose or piece of tubing can interfere with the way your spear gun shoots and make it unsafe.

If you have any questions about safety procedures for spear fishing you can always ask a professional diver for advice. It is easier to be safe in the first place then regret it later and most dive instructors are willing to help.
