Salt Water Spear Fishing

Spear fishing in salt water has become a popular way to enjoy all the inhabitants of the oceans while enjoying a popular pastime. Spear fishing has been a traditional way to catch fish for thousands of years and is still enjoyed today using slightly more advanced fishing equipment.

Most salt water fishermen employ the use of scuba diving equipment when fishing especially if they want to enjoy the fish that are in the deeps of the ocean. If you prefer you can also use snorkeling equipment in low water reefs for spear fishing.

You will need the right equipment before you start spear fishing in salt water. Many people prefer to use a spear gun or harpoon that is powered by air pumped through rubber tubing rather than any other type of spear gun.

The rubber tubing is often used as a tool to attract fish, since when it is strummed it makes a sound that salt water fish just can not resist. Before you decide which type of spear gun you want to use you need to check your local laws and wildlife regulations concerning the use of spear guns.

Going out into a body of salt water on a boat is often the easiest way to experience spear fishing since you will not have to find a place to enter or exit the rough waves of the ocean shores. Usually you will hire a boat with an experienced guide to take you out into the water.

The spear fishing charter boat's captain may have the gear you need to go spear fishing but if not you should be able to rent what you need on the mainland. You will also need to have some snorkeling or scuba training unless you are going to go spear fishing with a scuba or snorkeling instructor.

Spear fishing from the oceans shore is less costly than taking a chartered boat to sea but you should still have the proper safety equipment with you. You may also want to hire a guide to show you the good fishing areas among the reefs of the area. When you are spear fishing from the shores of the ocean you will need the basic snorkeling equipment and a buddy. It is always safer to go into the ocean with a friend but it is not necessary when you have had experience spear fishing.

Learning to use your diving equipment and making sure that you are experienced enough to dive into the deep water of the ocean is an important part of spear fishing in salt water. You may want to spend some time learning to use your diving equipment properly before you attempt to go spear fishing without a guide since the sport can be dangerous due to sharks and equipment malfunction.
